Ok, I am back

after Pruszków Master which was great. I went 4-2 and ended on 12th position of 42. Before Poznań Master I plan to post some basic topics about trollblood faction. I hope you will enjoy it! 🙂

Benefits

  • Extended deploy 2″This is a nice benefits which will help us to get us farther across the board especially if we go first against melee oriented opponent. Champs and beasts  will contest easier scenario pieces. Fennblades and Longriders will pressure your opponent deeper into his deployment.
  • Optional though bypassing and Remove From Play (RFP)Ok this is THE Benefit. BoH is all about RFP. Take down is a good tool which will help you with many matchups. RFP will force many of your opponents to drop lists where they relay on putting back models:- Ghost Fleet
    – CoC infantry lists
    – High reclaimer lists
    – Bane Warrior Mini Feat
    – Casters with revive
    – Morvahna 2 listIt will also mess up the soul and corpse mechanism.
You need to remember that RFP is only on warrior models. So warbeast do not benefit from this theme.
Remember that warrior models will avoid though so some steady though list will lose big portion of their survivability.
  • Free solos and attachmentsWe have some sweet picks in this one. Fellcaller is a must have. Rest depends on caster and unit choices. Runebearer is a solid pick. His abilities will help caster on spending fury.  Additionally he will extend control of our caster. Important thing is free attachments don’t give points toward next free models. And we cannot take whelps as free solo.
  • Mercs and MinionsTrolls also have some nice picks but more often we will take just solo which will fill the last point gap. Most common pics for me are gobber chef, feral or gremplin swarm.

Pros of Band of Heroes

  • RFP and thought removal.
  • We have many solos, units and beasts so we are scenario flexible.
  • We can make wide-spread lists which is unusual in our faction.
  • Good MAT
  • Deacent SPD
  • Trample-proof
  • Easy pathfinder tools for infantry

Cons of Band of Heroes

  • Almost no shooting
  • Almost no magic
  • There must be balance between good P+S and good Threat range.
  • Stone will not cover all our army

Band of Heroes tactics

In most cases we will jam our opponents with fennblades or some other tarpid unit. While opponent will fight our brave suicidals we will prepare the heavy punch which will be our champs and/or beasts.

In most cases we will need good anti-shooting tech or a good jamming.

Champs need some additional help to be delivered to combat as soon as possible. They do not like to be under fire. And their 9″ base TR is not so impressive. But when their charge they can make change the game by easily destroying opponent heavies.

Remember to use wisely Fellcaller. Even for 7 MAT champs the +2 to hit is very important to land every single blow. We are a buff faction so we cannot go into “they can handle this alone” mode. Every single point of damage is relevant.

Long Riders will help with scenario control and ground control. In some specific situations they can also jam.

List building

Beast should be chosen to fit to our caster game style. In most cases we will take some of these: Mauler, Brawler, Axer, Earthborn or Bomber.

There also some good tech beasts: Storm troll, Winter Troll or Bouncer.

In your list you need to decide the balance between one wound units and champs/longriders. Fenns improve TR’s. Longs and Champ’s bring hitting power.

For lists were you have double champs you want to take solo Hero Champion. Fennblades like Chronicler for concealment and Heroes tragedy. If you go heavy with long riders you need to take long rider hero for additional die on impact attack roll.

Casters choise:

Obvious choices:

  • Madrak 1 – Def buff, no knockdown and feat denying charges and healing your army.
  • Madrak 2 – Additional damage die, feat giving overtake and berserk.
  • Madrak 3 – Spellpiercer, Fortune (reroll), Feat giving no knockdown and 4+ though
  • Calandra 1 – rerolls, star-crossed (indirect def buff), feat reroll 1 and 2 on dices.
  • Kolgrima 1 – hunters mark, curse fate ( 1 dmg even when not exceeding arm), cloud wall, denying spells on a unit with action, dispel on melee attack, feat denying shooting.

Good choices:

  • Borka 1 – Upkeep giving +2 DEF and preventing spells, knockdown on army thanks to spell, feat gives +2 to movement. Personally  I think he is better in Storm of the north tier.
  • Grim 1 – control feat, Marked for Death, good knock down mechanism
  • Gunnbjorn – great denying feat, wall and can give the list some shooting potential
  • Grissel 2 – knockdown, dash, good feat makes her a solid pick.
  • Jarl 1 – Speed buff, cloud wall, and tactical supremacy

Experimental choices:

  • Borka 2 – We can use control feat, and concealment on spell but we need to mixed it whith beast composition to use rest of the caster.
  • Grissel 1 – fellcalls, calamity – I have mixed feelings about her, her spell list supports well beasts and I think that playing her only infantry heavy is a waste.
  • Horgle 1 – Knock down resist and +2 Arm buff, offensive feat. Personaly I think he is better in every other theme. Feat is better whith shooting and high TR.

Bad choices:

  • Doomshaper 1 – No infantry buffs but control feat is nice
  • Doomshaper 2 – No infantry buffs
  • Doomshaper 3 – Only one buffing scroll
  • Grim 2 – Grim has apparition and mortality which are good in every list but we will not use his feat and mage sight.
  • Ragnor 1 – he is just not for this theme, dig in and feat are just not enough.
